
A Genomic Approach to Evaluating Red Siskin Conservation Breeding Programs

Research led by our partner and recent PhD recipient, Dr. Karem Holm, together with our collaborators Dr. Kathryn Rodriguez-Clark and Dr. Erica Royer, integrates genomic analyses into ex situ breeding management to evaluate key assumptions about genetic diversity, inbreeding history, and family relationships among red siskins under human care.
Genomic data confirmed significant genetic differentiation between Venezuelan and Guyanese populations, supporting the decision to use exclusively birds of Venezuelan origin in future Venezuelan reintroduction efforts.
Additionally, molecular estimates of genetic diversity and inbreeding supported the hypothesis that historical illegal trade introduced wild genetic variation into US avicultural populations—critical information for optimizing genetically informed breeding strategies. Although no evidence of hybridization with canaries was found, the development of molecular tools will support continued future monitoring.
By confirming many of the assumptions underpinning present scientific management, , this research allows us to continue current practices with greater confidence, equipped with genomic tools for future reviews, ensuring the red siskin’s long-term viability.
