Tiny Red Bird Recovery

The New England Zoo has recently published an article on its blog called “Tiny Red Bird Recovery”, referring to the Red Siskin.

They mention that illegal wildlife trafficking is a global threat that severely affects many species, such as our critically endangered red siskin, which is prized for its song and color, and its mass capture for the pet trade has drastically reduced its population in the wild.

In the face of this crisis, Zoo New England has joined our newly formed AZA SAFE (Saving Animals from Extinction) Red Siskin Program to help us protect this species. It thus supports our captive breeding work with birds rescued from illegal trade with the goal of safely reintroducing them to their natural habitat.

In addition, they mention their support for our work with coffee-growing communities in Venezuela to promote sustainable agricultural practices that protect the red siskin’s habitat, encouraging ecological certifications such as the Smithsonian Institute’s Bird-Friendly® certification.

The New England Zoo has a breeding pair of red siskins as part of a backup population in AZA-accredited zoos, an action that also adds to the fight to save the red siskin.
